Boone County Sheriff’s officials confirm that a truck driver who had been charged with manslaughter for the death of a Boone County Fire assistant chief has died after an illness.

Boone County Sheriff’s Captain Brian Leer tells 939 the Eagle that 64-year-old Kevin Brunson had been ill, adding that sheriff’s detectives have confirmed that Brunson has died.

939 the Eagle News was at the Boone County Courthouse for Brunson’s March 28 video arraignment, and Brunson appeared to have fallen asleep or passed out during court. Brunson was hospitalized two days later and was then released from jail on his own recognizance, after posting bond.

A capias warrant was issued on Monday, after Brunson failed to appear in court for a hearing before Judge Kevin Crane. It’s unclear when Brunson died.

The deadly December 22 collision happened at the 135-mile marker, just east of Columbia. It killed Boone County Fire assistant chief Bryant Gladney.
